Bioretention Project

PROJECT DETAILS

Scope: Bioretention Project

Location: Washington, DC

Scope of Work

For this project, Arya Civil designed and installed bioretention cells along the sidewalk on 19th Street and on all four corners of the intersection of 19th Street and L Street NW. Because the project site was within the city’s Combined Sewer System, during heavy rainfall both sewage and storm water would empty directly into the rivers. This project lessens the impact on the sewer system by retaining some of the storm water and slowing the remaining runoff.

Project HIghlights

The project beautified a major intersection in the central business district and demonstrated how to integrate low-impact development projects into the existing urban infrastructure. Because it’s a top destination in the central business district for dining and outdoor cafes, 19th Street has a high level of pedestrian activity. This project demonstrates that bioretention cells can be integrated into the urban fabric while creating high-quality and functional landscape and hardscape that build on the context of the site.
